We have the most fun on our adventures that include biking through the trees, paddling across a lake or climbing a mountain. But sometimes our adventures are closer to home and come in a different form: home improvement projects, hauling some boxes or picking up furniture. With our simple, modular approach to camper vans, we don’t waste space on unnecessary gadgets. Our vans are built for people who want to spend more time doing what they love, and not worrying about if their gear (or extra cargo) will fit.

That’s where the Wayfarer garage comes in. Our underbed storage area is one of the largest you’ll find in a camper van, and can hold a massive amount of gear.

In this video, Andy walks you through the garage space in our Wilford conversion for the Ford Transit, and shows just how much you can fit inside.

What Makes a Wayfarer Garage Different

The coolest thing about our garage is actually what’s NOT in it:

  • We don’t have cabinets full of batteries, because we have simpler power options with solar and etaker accessories.
  • We don’t have massive water tanks, because wet baths can be maintenance nightmares, and let’s be honest showers are always better at a gym or aquatic center anyways.
  • We don’t have overbuilt storage, because your needs change over time, and we’d rather give you room to stack totes in the garage when you need them and take them out when you don’t.

But there are a few cool things we DO include:

  • Sturdy floors that are water-resistant and built to handle heavy gear
  • L-tracks with multiple options for securing items
  • Unistrut on the bottom of the bed platform, again with multiple options to secure your stuff
  • And with just a few simple tools, you can even remove the bed platform to maximize hauling space whenever you need it

Real Gear, Real Simple

Numbers are great to have, but what does that look like on a real trip?

  • Totes full of gear: If you like to organize in 15-gallon totes like we do (the tough ones with the yellow lid), you can fit 8 in most garage configurations

  • Bikes: Three mountain bikes or road bikes fit easily in the garage, along with extra gear. We’ve even seen setups with 4+ bikes. If you have an XL frame, you may need to drop your seat or add on optional bed risers.

  • Water gear: You can fit two fully-inflated paddleboards down the middle of the van. You can also bring your inflatable kayak, paddles, life jackets, dry bags and still have plenty of room for other essentials.

  • Climbing gear: Ropes, helmets, shoes and packs fit easily on top of the wheel well boxes, while larger crash pads have no problem fitting in the middle of the garage.

  • Dogs and pets: A kennel or travel crate fits easily, leaving enough space for gear for you and your four-legged friends.

  • Extra sleeping space: You can set up a cot or camping bed right in the garage for another person to sleep comfortably – perfect for kids or a an impromptu guest.

  • Fun fact: You could fit approximately 8,112 Rubik’s Cubes in the garage too. We haven’t tested this yet, but if you do, hit us up and we’ll mail you some swag.

And of course, you can mix and match your way to your custom adventure too. Maybe it’s two bikes and a couple of boxes to move your niece to college, or ski gear plus climbing gear for laps in the mountains before you hit the desert for some vertical adventures.
