Buying your van is the biggest (and let’s be honest, priciest) step in turning your camper van dreams into reality.

We get it, and we’re here to make things as hassle-free as possible. Whether you’re after a brand new ride or looking to save some money with a used one, we’ve got you covered.  While not all builders will convert used vans, we’re all about making camper vans more accessible—so you can get out there and start making memories.

If a used van fits your needs and budget, it might take a little extra legwork, but the potential savings make it well worth the effort.

Pros of Buying a Used Van

  1. Lower Cost – Vehicles lose value the moment they leave the lot, and vans are no different. You can save big when buying used.

  2. Potential Insurance & Registration Savings – Older vans often come with lower ongoing costs like insurance and registration, keeping more money in your pocket.

  3. Lots of Options – From dealerships to fleets to private sellers, there are plenty of used vans out there in all kinds of conditions, giving you a wide range to choose from.

Cons of Buying a Used Van

  1. No Warranty – Unless you’re going for a certified pre-owned van, most used vans are sold as-is, meaning any repairs are on you.

  2. Fewer Customization Options – When buying used, you might have to settle for certain features, specs, or colors that don’t quite match your wish list. The good news on this point is that some of those features Wayfarer can install for you as a part of your conversion. Redemption points!
  3. Lots of Options – While having a wide range is great, it can feel overwhelming—but don’t sweat it, we’re here to help you sort through it all!

Know What You Are Shopping For

We convert specific models of Ford Transit and RAM ProMaster vans, so it’s key to know which van works best for you.

Set clear limits on your budget and mileage. Other than the make and model, these are the biggest factors that’ll narrow down your search.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you start shopping:

  • RAM vans need to be from 2014 or newer, and Ford vans from 2015 or newer to work with the Wayfarer Vans conversion

  • Make sure you’re looking at cargo vans with empty backs—not crew or passenger vans with wraparound windows and rear seats, and also no extended models

  • The cargo area must be empty, so keep an eye out for vans with built-in floors, shelving, A/C units, or bulkheads. Sometimes these features are easy to remove, but other times they can create bigger issues. Snap a few photos and send them over to our Journey Architects – they’ll help you determine if it’s a good fit.

  • Listings can be confusing, especially with all the different lengths, heights, and wheelbases. Even dealers get it wrong sometimes. Not sure if a van is listed accurately? Send the listing over to our Journey Architects and they can help you out.

Where to Find Your Used Van

You’ve got plenty of options when it comes to finding the perfect used van. From dealerships to private sales, there’s no shortage of places to look.

  • Car Dealerships: Some offer certified pre-owned vans with warranties for extra peace of mind.

  • Online Marketplaces: Check out Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Craigslist to browse private sellers’ listings.

  • Auto Auction Sites: Sites like AutoTrader, CarGurus, and Autolist let you browse a mix of private sellers, dealerships, and auction listings.

  • Rental Companies: U-Haul, Enterprise, and others often sell their retired cargo vans after a few years of service.

  • Fleet Sales: Delivery companies and other businesses with van fleets often sell their used vehicles in bulk, and you might score a great deal on a lightly-used one.

  • Local Community: Don’t forget to check your local paper, community bulletin boards or word of mouth from your friends and family.

Used Van Inspection Checklist

Found a van that looks like a solid option? Give it a once-over with this checklist to make sure it’s up to snuff:

  • Inspect the Exterior: Check for signs of bodywork that might indicate previous damage, and look for rust, especially in hidden spots like the wheel wells or underneath the vehicle.
  • Does It Come with Spares?: Make sure it includes a spare tire and a second set of keys. Both can be pricey to replace if they’re missing.
  • Check the Tires: Tires can be expensive to replace, so check how much tread is left and if they’re nearing the end of their life.
  • Inspect the Cargo Area: Interior scuffs and dings are no big deal since they’ll get covered in the conversion, but look out for rusted floors or leaky seals that could lead to bigger issues. Make a plan to repair those spots or eliminate it from the hunt if you don’t want any extra work.
  • Check the Doors: Make sure all the doors open and close smoothly. Misaligned doors might be a sign of previous damage or repairs.
  • Take It for a Spin: Drive it at different speeds and listen for any unusual noises—squeaks, rattles, or grinding. Make sure the steering, gears, and brakes feel smooth. Check the heating, air conditioning, and keep an eye on the dashboard for any warning lights.
  • Test the Little Things: Don’t forget the basics—check that the radio, windows, and wipers work, and look for any cracks in the windshield. Every detail counts.
  • Consider a CARFAX Report: CARFAX uses information like prior accidents, titles, service history, and number of owners to give you some peace of mind on the vehicle’s history.

Don’t Forget to Call the Experts

Shopping for a used van can feel a bit overwhelming – especially if it’s not something you do every day. But the good news? There are experts who handle this kind of thing all the time. Here’s who to call when you need a little backup:

  • Auto Mechanic: If you’re unsure after running through our checklist or something seemed off during the test drive, a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is a great idea. This can also be especially helpful if you’re buying a van from out of state.

  • Lender: If you’re financing, talk to your bank, credit union, or even online lenders. They’ll walk you through the process, this is especially helpful if the seller hasn’t paid off their loan yet. Be sure to also check out Wayfarer’s financing options.

  • Journey Architect: Need help picking out the right van or deciding if a deal is worth it? Reach out to our crew at Wayfarer Vans. Our Journey Architects are here to guide you every step of the way, from choosing the right model to helping you evaluate used van options.
